As a Health and Fitness Coach for over
18yrs., I have spent most of my life searching for a way to help clients
transform their health, and their bodies. After years of trying new
programs, diets, and behavior modification techniques, what I have discovered
is lasting transformation happens from the inside out. No diet, exercise
program can transform you and your lifestyle unless it addresses changes in the
mind( soul) , body, and spirit together. When one of these are out of
balance it effects the whole body.
The key to unlocking true transformation is
uncovering the spiritual issues that are at the root of most all unhealthy
habits. Behavior is dictated by our beliefs ,values and life experiences.
Managing stress biblical and not turning to idols ( instant
gratification that the world offers as solutions) is the key to prevent strongholds
taking over our lives.
It is our daily habits that lead us towards our
success in all areas of life. Habits are created by our daily thoughts,
routines ( how do we manage our time, energy) our physical habits like exercise
and daily activities, our nutrition ( what are habits in regards to eating).
So if changing our daily habits are the key to transforming our selves
and our realities, why do we struggle so much with changing our habits? God
created us to bear His image, he also created us in 3 parts that are intricately
woven together to serve a purpose. God also gives us a guide book that
instructs us on how to function as a whole person and has given us a purpose to
accomplish while on earth.
First and foremost we are spiritual beings, which means our spiritual disciplines must be a top priority. What
are your daily spiritual habits? Do you read the bible daily, meditate on
scripture, spend time abiding with God alone?
Secondly, we have a soul ( mind, will, emotions,
personality). What do we do each day to renew our minds? What are our
mental habits? We are bombarded with negative images, news, music
and sometimes people. Since our thoughts dictates our behavior and
influences our beliefs, wouldn't it be beneficial to focus on renewing our minds
daily with truth, goodness, and positive affirmations. The battle is in
the mind! This is what Paul writes about in the New testament as the key to
overcoming and staying on the straight path. It is also key in your
success. Our deep motivation and behavior especially, unhealthy habits ,are
driven by our spiritual status of being a deprived soul and how we choose to fill this relational hole with God or without God.
From the beginning of humanity from the
fall out of Eden our soul and spirit have been separated from our God (
creator). Our wholeness can now only be achieved in heaven. Our greatest spiritual needs are all the same.
Love, acceptance, worth/value, security/control, sense of
purpose/meaning, forgiveness drives our behavior ,especially when it comes to
managing stress. Unmanaged stress can not only lead to physical disease
but also mental disorders and diseases.
Lastly, we have a body. What are our daily habits
for our body? Do we engage in physical activity each day and eat foods
that are nourishing? Even if our mind and spirit are healthy, if we are
not taking care of our body it will effect our ability to think, handle stress,
and to move freely without disease and sickness. God designed our bodies
to be a temple or vessel for our spirit and soul. Our body was giving
senses to be able to experience our surroundings, carry out God's great
commission, and to physically help others.
God is glorified when we are
good stewards of what He has given us. Does your body feel like a temple
or a prison for your spirit?
We have a rebellious spirit that is constantly
battling God's great plan for us! Until there is surrender and to allow God
to heal us and guide us, we will always struggle with our choices.
We
always have 2 choices and our free will gets us in trouble every time since the
beginning of time. However God's love for us allows us to choose our
designation.
My whole life until I surrendered was about
traveling down the back roads, bumpy roads with detour signs. However, I
learned many lessons from those destructive roads. So much that I really want to follow the straight road and yield to the signs when facing crossroads. There is
a lighted path where God goes before us, however we must surrender and be
disciplined in order to follow. Self control in all areas of life takes
the work of the holy spirit. Even surrender takes discipline moment by
moment, thought by thought and action by action.
